As you might guess, I am deeply honored to have been awarded a 2019 Iowa Artist Fellowship. In addition, I am over-the-moon-excited about the possibilities at hand for several reasons.
First and foremost, this is an invaluable opportunity for me to simplify some extraneous "stuff" and focus more on my work. I already feel like I can breathe easier. With so many moving parts, it can be a challenge to be my best self. Paring down a daunting schedule is a welcomed change. I have been reading Greg McKeown's book "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" and looking for ways to implement these ideas in my own life. The timeliness is golden.
Second, I am looking forward to getting to know my fellow Fellows. I did not previously know any of these talented individuals. I mean, I read their bios and They. Are. Talented. Here's a link:
There is a magical dialogue that happens when artists discuss and brainstorm with other artists. I am already envisioning the ridiculous and super-powered conversations that might unfold. I cannot wait to see what they will create over the course of the Fellowship year, too.
So, you might not see me around the Des Moines Art Center quite as much over the coming year - at least not in the same capacity. The Des Moines Art Center remains one of my favorite places on earth, but I'm changing my role to facilitate more dedicated studio art-making time. I will enjoy getting to use fresh eyes in the galleries again.
In short, I am pumped and can't wait to get to it! Thanks to the Iowa Arts Council and The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, The Iowa Legislature, and The National Endowment for the Arts for this opportunity! Thank you for supporting artists and the arts in Iowa.
