Can I Help You? (Alexa)

Have you ever wondered about the gender of digital assistants?

"May I Help You? (Alexa)" is a custom-coded interactive system that uses a "hacked" Video Girl Barbie as a surveillance webcam. Video Girl Barbie was produced by Mattel from 2010 - 2012 when it was discontinued due to privacy and safety concerns. The doll has a hidden camera embedded in her necklace pendant and could originally be used to record short video clips. Here, I have modified it to capture the viewer's likeness and portray it in pixels made of text on a screen.

The text is from an article published in the Guardian by Thomas McMullan titled "What does the panopticon mean in the age of digital surveillance? The parallel between Jeremy Bentham’s panopticon and CCTV may be clear, but what happens when you step into the world of data capture?"
